Tom SmithProjecting Success: How Your Technical Staff Can Help You Land More Projects
February 11, 2010 in Syracuse

Contrary to popular belief, the Business Development responsibility for a firm doesn’t rest solely on the BD and marketing professionals. At the SMPS February education session, Tom Smith, National SMPS President, drove that point home (see photo at right). His presentation highlighted the fact that Project Managers and technical staff who assist with business development are a valuable asset in today’s economy.

Through an interactive discussion, we discussed how critical business development habits can be incorporated into daily routines of technical staff and can increase your business.

Tom covered topics such as:

  • Why your technical staff can be uncomfortable with Business Development, and how to overcome the obstacles
  • Tips for engaging technical professionals
  • How to improve listening and communication skills
  • How to be a problem solver, not a problem maker
  • How to ask for additional work from existing clients

The group had a great discussion during the presentation and all walked away with a few new ideas!

Sell From Your Strength: Design and Build Your Brand
October 1, 2009 in Albany

On October 1, 2009, the Upstate SMPS New York was proud to host “Sell From Your Strength – Design & Build Your Brand” featuring Theresa Marshall, Partner & Brand Strategist at Allegory Studios. Through an interactive workshop attendees learned how to firms can develop a unique and memorable message that speaks more effectively than the bottom line on a fee proposal; how the most recognizable and successful brands apply the power of archetypes to build awareness and loyalty; how to apply those principles to their own marketing strategies to create highly memorable stories and messages about their organization that truly differentiates them from competitors; how to apply a creative blueprint that makes writing proposals, websites and promotional materials consistent, compelling and easy; and how to motivate everyone at their organization to truly understand their story and tell it with passion – at interviews, trade events, social gatherings and even on elevators.
